This is the first diary entry in our series showcasing design talent. Today we've chosen to feature North Carolina-based designer Leigh Jones, who exemplifies the talent exceptional designers have for placing very fine things in their clients’ homes and commercial spaces. This makes the name of her storefront and studio, The Very Thing, Ltd, so apropos.
Her auspiciously refined destination, located at 2100 South Church Street in Burlington, has been a fixture in the community since 1926 when it was founded as the Neese-Shoffner Furniture Company. Quickly developing a reputation as the Piedmont area's premier furniture store, the company sold some of the region’s finest home furnishings and accessories until it was revamped in 1974.
The reinvention included renaming the business and the shop The Very Thing, which would become the go-to place for fine antique furnishings and interior design services. Leigh joined the firm as the principal designer just four years later, after graduating from East Carolina University with a major in interior design. Today, along with designing high-end residential and commercial projects for clients in the Southeast, the company is renowned for offering custom draperies and upholstery, unique antique furniture, and unusual lamps and chandeliers.
The storefront and studio also contains a vast inventory of antique European linens, and fine Hungarian goose down pillows and down bedding. Leigh sources many of these items from us—giving us at Pandora de Balthazár a deep sense of pride that a designer with such exquisite taste values our products enough to put them in her clients’ projects.
This is particularly flattering because Leigh is known for fostering long-term clients with whom she builds close relationships. As these friendships evolve, one project develops into another and another. She brings a thriving love of beauty to a commercial project or a home and its most intimate spaces; and her use of color is legendary. I’d go so far as to say she coaxes the most beautiful design poetry out of every client's interiors.
This busy designer, who never ceases to amaze me with the depth and breath of her work, has a particular way of composing the elements that coalesce to create a sumptuous interior, which I think is evident in the project we’re featuring here on the Pandora de Balthazár Diary. Curating luxury home décor is one of her strong suits. We’ve witnessed it over and over again as the talented designer has sourced our products for her projects—quite a few of them, in fact, after becoming our first stocking dealer in North Carolina more than 17 years ago. And not just our antique and vintage textiles, but our European Sleep System made up of our high-quality Hungarian goose down, as well.
A professional member of ASID for over thirty-five years, she has built a staff of professionals who are masters at guiding clients through the decision-making process for new construction or renovations. Leigh is a natural at honing in on comfortable luxury, using her creativity to tap into each client’s personal style as she and her staff envision rooms that are beautiful and comfortable. Through the years she has developed a series of questions that help capture a client’s taste, an interview process that provides homeowners and business owners with meaningful environments.
I’ve always enjoyed seeing her execute her romantic side—the result being interiors filled with classically historical references and sumptuous materials, which is why I wanted to feature this particular project today.
